The course's architect, William Mitchell, is known for his design of northeastern golf courses, amongst them McCann and Kutscher's.
Carvel's unique length of 6,977 yards from the blue tees (6,463 from the whites, 4,979 from the reds), allows for many interesting elevation changes. The front nine has numerous water hazards that come into play on 4 holes and three more on the back nine. The Club's signature hole, #7, is a challenging Par 3, with a narrow tree lined fairway that finishes with a backdrop of the Catskill Mountains. Breathtaking views of the mountains, particularly Blackhead Mountain and Hunter Mountain, are visible from most of the back nine. The greens throughout are pristine and gently undulating.
